  Modern
This expressive and athletic form is at the heart of RoCo. Modern dance is a healthy and enriching medium for dancers to find themselves and express who they are through their bodies. This form is famous for breaking and tweaking the traditions of formal dance. Some movement challenges include: dancing “off-center,” in and out of the ground, isolating body parts, power, momentum, stillness, articulation and musicality. The music is diverse -anything from opera to hip hop.

  Jazz
This sultry, lyrical and sometimes flashy style is based on a traditional technical warm-up and exercises designed to develop the dancer’s strength, placement, musicality and performance style. It is most commonly seen in musical theater and commercial venues. Jazz takes the ballet vocabulary, brings it lower to the ground and emphasizes line and isolation of the body. Set to popular music. A Jazz Slipper is encouraged.

  Contact Improvisation
Contact Improv is a blend of Partner Dance, Aikido, Wrestling, Acrobatics, and Improvisation. It involves being in contact with another body while working with four common themes, weight sharing, counterbalancing, falling and flying. Dancers, while remaining in contact, move with one another in response to creativity, and to the other person's movement. This can happen rolling on the floor, standing on your feet or "flying" which involves one person being lifted into the air. It is playful yet very physcially and mentally engaging. Each moment is alive with possiblity. You never know what's going to happen next. You are dancing with the mystery and are therefore fully arrived in the present moment."

  Capoeira
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines a subtle blend of dance, gymnastics, and acrobatics. Capoeira's roots originate from the Bantu tradition in Angola and was used by the enslaved Africans in Brazil as a form of revolution. The African slaves masked their self-defense tactics in to a dance so that the slaves masters and plantation overseers were not able to recognize their self-defense training and escape tactics. Today, Capoeira is a game that is "played," not fought. The challenge of the game is for the player to harmoniously meld together in a powerful flow the balance and flexibility of acrobatics, grace, strength, dance, and speed. ~ All Levels
